Glock : 5 Reasons Why

Glock : 5 Reasons Why

If you are known to your group of friends as the “Gun Guy, or Gal” I am willing to bet there are two questions you come across from time to time

What type of gun should I buy?
And why should I buy that gun?

I like to preface my answer with, well just about everyone makes a good gun these days, there are many reputable manufactures making fantastic firearms. From Springfield Armory, to Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Sig Sauer, Kahr Arms, FN, and if you got slightly deeper pockets HK. That’s just to name a few.

I like to avoid just spoon-feeding people answers on what they should buy, I’d prefer them to shop their options, see what catches their eye, and offer my honest opinion when asked about certain makes and models.

With all of that being said there are those who prefer to just be pointed in the right direction. No need to bounce around from gun maker to gun maker. What do you trust your life with? To those my answer has been the same for years.

Glock

Specifically Glock 9mm

Further specifically Glock 19

Then comes the follow-up. Why Glock? I have five reasons why I trust my life to Glock, five reasons that give Glock the edge when compared to modern defensive firearms.

– Simple

0605

No extra buttons, no levers, nothing requiring fine motor skills. When adrenaline enters our blood stream we tend to get tunnel vision, we forget to breath, and we lose fine motor skills. Hand-Eye coordination go out the door and manual dexterity is lost in our fingers. When these things happen fidgeting with buttons and levers could cost you the ultimate price.

With Glock its as simple as point and press the trigger. With no controls other than the slide stop, trigger, and magazine release. It’s simplistic design makes it the optimal defensive weapon regardless of your level of training.

The simplicity is not only in the operation. It emulates its way through the list of all 35 parts (including the front and rear sight and 5 parts in the magazine) all held together by 3 pins.
The less parts present, the less parts that can break.

Fighting for you life is complicated, the tool you use to fight shouldn’t be.

– Safe

glock-safe-action-system

But, But, But… Glocks don’t have safeties! It’s difficult not to hang my head aND sigh when I hear this statement. While yes, the do not have a manually operated safety, the Glock safe action trigger system houses three different passive safeties. All of which are disengaged by pressing the trigger to the rear.

The trigger safety is a bar incorporated into the center of the trigger face. This small lever prohibits the pistol from firing. It’s positioned to block the trigger from moving reward until both the trigger and trigger safety are depressed simultaneously.

The firing pin safety is a small, spring-loaded piece of metal placed in the firing pin channel mechanically blocking the firing pin from moving forward. When the trigger moves reward a vertical extension on the trigger bar makes contact with the bottom of the firing pin safety. Pushing up on it and moving it out of the path of the firing pin, allowing the firing pin to make contact with the primer of the chambered round.

The drop safety is a cruciform shape attached to the rear of the trigger bar. It sits on a shelf position directly in line with the firing pin lug. As the trigger moves rearward it forces the spring-loaded firing pin assembly rearward and once it reaches its fully retracted position the drop safety drops into a cut out, making way for the firing pin assembly to move forward.

As with everything, training is key. If you start off with a Glock and train yourself to be safe with this weapon platform all other platforms will fall in line. If you dedicate yourself to trigger discipline obeying the 4 rules of firearm safety, paying special attention to rule number three.

DO NOT TOUCH THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON TARGET AND YOU HAVE MADE THE DECISION TO SHOOT!

A podcast I listened to years ago titled the handgun podcast put it as simply as can be. If you don’t want the gun to go BANG! Keep your booger hook off the bang switch.

– Reliable / Durable

89TxnTkThese two really go Hand in Hand. Other than a revolver you really can’t beat the out of the box reliability of the Glock. No break in period, never seen on finicky about what ammo you use. For crying out loud it comes from the factory lubricated and range ready.

Does that mean they will never have a malfunction? No. From time to time I’ve heard of it happening. It happens more commonly with people who swap out the barrel, recoil spring, or trigger assembly parts with parts from third-party suppliers.

As I am writing this I have 21 different Glocks in my collection. I have a Gen 3 Glock 17 that I have never cleaned The round count is somewhere in the 5-7 thousand range, not a single malfunction. I have a Gen 2 Glock 19 that looks like it’s been to hell and back, 28 years old and still runs like new. I personally have never had a malfunction with a Glock.

During an outing last year I lent my threaded barrel Glock 19 with a RMR mounted on the slide to a handful of new shooters to try out. After running about 200 rounds of steel cased wolf FMJ we had a handful of failures. Gun failed to go completely into battery. I believe these to be attributed to the aftermarket barrel in combination with crappy steel cased ammo.

Now onto the durability, I’ve been an Armorer for 5 years now. If you don’t know what that means. It means I am certified by Glock to repair guns that NEVER BREAK! I mainly tune triggers, install sights, and extended controls. In my 5 years of being certified I have had one single repair.

A friend was having trouble with his trigger resetting after being fired. After disassembling his gun I found he had replaced a few pieces in the trigger assembly with after market third-party parts. I replaced them with factory competition parts and it was back to normal.

The durability level on the Glock makes torture tests boring. From being drug behind a truck down a gravel road. Submerged in salt water for a week. Buried in mud, dropped from a helicopter, and frozen in a block of ice and then beaten with a sledge-hammer till free from ice. They truly are unstoppable. Iraqveteran8888 on You Tube recently did a full auto torture test. The gun became so hot the frame of the gun began to melt… But it still kept running.

I tell this story so often I can hear my wife groan as she mutters not the screw driver story again.

My first time in armorers school. The instructor picks up a Glock 19 off the table in front of him. Glock in one hand flat head screw driver in the other and he begins to violently scrape the slide of the gun intentionally trying to remove the finish. The room fell silent, the look of horror filled everyone’s face as he held up the gun we all held dearly in our heart. Showing bright silver scratches covering the right side of the slide. He then grabbed a rag, and wiped off the scratches? With a smirk he said proudly “that was the finish coming off the screw driver, not the finish coming off the slide.”

Anyone that knows anything at all about guns will not argue with the reliability and durability of the Glock Platform. Saying a Glock is reliable is just like saying Hillary Clinton is a treasonous criminal. Some may disagree but they have no proof to back it up.

– Mags

FullSizeRender

This reason might not seem like a big deal to some, but to me it’s a game changer. Glock mags are cheap, super reliable, and the are EVERYWHERE! Base plates, extensions, factory mags, and aftermarket mags can be found in any firearm retailer in the country, possibly in the world.

The capacity options are insane. In the 9mm platform you can have anywhere from a 10 round mag to a 33 round mag. With a whole host of numbers in between. 10/12/15/17/22/26/33 these are just some of the capacity options for the double stack 9mm Glock.

The beauty of it all is if the mag is long enough to fit in the grip of your gun, then it will work in your gun.

Here’s the kicker, not only will 9mm Glock mags work in 9mm Glocks. They will also work in an ever growing list of Carbines and SBR’s. Manufacturers like Angstadt Arms, Quarter Circle 10, Kel Tech’s sub 2000, and the Kriss Vector all run 9mm Glock Mags just to name a few.

I Personally carry my Glock 19 with a standard 15 round mag in the gun, 1 round in the chamber making a total of 16. I also carry 2 17 round mags opposite of my gun on my left side adding 34 rounds to the 16 in the gun. Giving me a grand total of 50 rounds on my person. But… Being the over-doer that I am I also carry 3 33 round mags in my tactical man purse. Leaving me just shy of 150 rounds on a daily basis.

Glock mags are plentiful and reasonably priced. If you own a Glock buy a few mags here and there. Stash them around your house, in your car, In your purse or briefcase. Remember no one ever came out of a gun fight wishing they had less ammo.

– Commonality

FullSizeRender (1)Okay, this one undoubtably has a few people scratching their head. You mean to tell me I should buy a Glock because other people buy Glocks? The simple answer to that is yes, yes you should buy one just because everyone else has.

The Glock 19 is arguably the most popular handgun in the world. Countless military, law enforcement, and government agencies world-wide take on the darkness of our societies with a Glock on their hip.

But that really isn’t what makes the commonality of the Glock important. With the American firearm market so heavily saturated with Glock 17/19/26 pistols, it’s influence throughout the industry is undeniable.

Any holster, mag carrier, weapon light, sighting system, threaded or ported barrel are all produced for the Glock 9mm platform before any other manufacturer. Any aftermarket option that can be added to a modern-day fighting side arm is available for the Glock

I challenge you to find any holster manufacture that doesn’t produce a whole slue of options for the Glock 19.

The commonality factor can also flow into your group of friends. I’m fortunate enough to have an awesome group of friends, all very pro gun, we shoot together, we train together, and we all carry Glock 19’s.

Going out to diner or a movie with a 5 person team all armed the same, trained, and close as family magnifies your confidence in being able to handle any defensive situation you
may come across. This is a very Important reason why law enforcement agencies carry the same platform and caliber. God forbid if you find yourself at ground zero when the shots ring out having more than one person sharing the same weapon system and mags could mean the difference between life and death.

The Glock 19 is small enough to hide yet large enough to fight with. Simple enough to operate under stress. Safe in all situations. The standard of reliability, with enough capacity to give you the edge in any environment.

Oh and all the cool kids carry one…

These are my reasons for what I carry.
What are yours?

Gun Free Zones : Enabler of the Active Shooter

Gun Free Zones : Enabler of the Active Shooter

I’ve tried to stay quiet on this issue due to feeling like a broken record with my stance on these acts of violence. I told myself I wouldn’t write this, I don’t want to come off insensitive. I believe that we should be mourning the lost not delving into politics. But I can’t log onto any social media, turn on the tv, or listen to the radio without hearing some uneducated expert spewing his opinion on what firearm regulation could have prevented the shooting in Orlando.

As always my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their family’s as they go through undoubtably the most difficult time of their lives. I don’t say that just to say it either. Innocent people were targeted based on their sexual preference and it truly disgusts me. I may not agree with their lifestyle but my heart truly breaks for those involved and it angers me that things like this continue to happen.

Something needs to change.

Over the past few days all of my feeds are flooded with people who do not know guns, do not own guns, don’t shoot, don’t train, don’t carry, can’t tell you the difference between a mag and a clip. Yet they are all pushing their uninformed opinion of higher regulations on firearms.

One thing I read that really stood out to me was.

We do not want to take guns from the “good guys” we only want to stop “the dark side” of gun owners.

Well finally there is something we have in common. That’s particularly why I carry a gun, to stop “the dark side” of gun owners.

I agree we need to be able to stop “the dark side.” Those willing to walk boldly into an area filled with innocent people and slaughter them with no remorse.
What type of regulations could be put in place to stop these acts of violence?

A longer waiting period to purchase a gun will not stop someone who is bent on unleashing hate on the innocent. These acts are ALWAYS premeditated.

A magazine capacity limit and a assault weapons ban put in place by the state of California did not stop the San Bernardino shooters.
An all out gun ban put in place by the city of Paris did not stop the monsters that committed the attack last November.

So what could we change?

If you truly, and I mean truly want to stop these atrocities. You need to let the “good guys” fight “the dark side”

Time after time after time after time after time. These acts take place in areas where the “good guys” are told not to bring their gun. While “the dark side” waltzes right in met with no force at all.
People say we do not want to take guns away from “the good guys” while Gun Free Zones do exactly that, they disarm those ready to fight “the dark side”

Gun Free Zones are the enabler of The Active Shooter.

If we as a nation truly want to stop these acts of violence, we need to stop chaining down those willing to fight with laws that DO NOTHING but announce that everyone present in this location is unarmed and defenseless. They know this for a fact, we give them the upper hand and peace of mind knowing that they will have no one to deal with until Law Enforcement arrive.

All I’m asking is for a fighting chance, Ridding our country of Gun Free Zones will not stop these acts immediately. But the death toll will decrease and those willing to commit these acts will be met with force like they have never seen before. They would no longer have a room full of sheep ready for the slaughter, everywhere they went there would be a few sheepdog hiding in plain sight ready to bring the fight to them.

The only language these people speak is violence, no amount of laws or regulations can change that. The only thing we can do is meet their violence with those willing to protect our own. Willing to do what ever necessary to ensure the safety of those around us.

Don’t be an enabler, END GUN FREE ZONES!

Lord, Liar, Or Lunatic

Lord, Liar, Or Lunatic

Jesus Christ is such a polarizing figure. Regardless of who you are, where you are from, or what you believe odds are you have some sort of opinion about Jesus.

Lord, Liar, or Lunatic is a chapter in Josh McDowell’s book, More Than a Carpenter. In this inspirational classic McDowell explores the evidence on who Jesus said he was.

This particular chapter has stuck with me for years and in my own words I would like to give my opinion on who Jesus is.

Based the claims Jesus himself made in the gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. Jesus was one of those three things. Either he was Lord, or he was a Liar, or he was a Lunatic.

Many people have no problem claiming that Jesus was a “good man” a wise prophet, a “bringer or good news.”
Most of the world have no issue with Jesus being a “good man” But Jesus said he was more than that.

Jesus made a claim not only to be the son of God but to be one with God, to be God in the flesh.

So… If Jesus made these claims, knowing that they weren’t true, he would not be a “good man” nor a “wise prophet” he would simply be a Liar.

Someone who lied to thousands and thousands of people, Giving them false hope that he would deliver them from their sins.

By definition Jesus could not be a “good man” and a liar who misled people into believing that he and God were one in the same.

Then begs the question, how could someone who is a liar consistently maintain from beginning to end the purest and noblest character throughout history. If he was a Liar why would he choose to die for a lie? How could he pull off a multitude of lies about himself concerning the prophecies that predicted everything from where he would be born, to how he was betrayed, and even how he was killed. Someone who lived as Jesus lived, taught as Jesus taught, and died as Jesus died could not have been a Liar…

Okay so let’s examine the other option. He was a lunatic, He claimed to be the son of God, he claimed to be God in the flesh, and he truly believed it. In this day in age if someone walked around claiming to be God… He would end up in a mental institution, in a nice padded room, for the rest of his life.

If Jesus was insane his poise and composure would be nothing short of amazing. He spoke the most profound words ever recorded. The idea of Jesus being a lunatic is easily dismissed simply based on how profound, logical, simple yet vast his teachings were and he himself followed those teachings perfectly.

In conclusion. If Jesus was not a liar, nor a Lunatic, then he must be Lord.

The choice is yours to make. You can shut him up and dismiss him as a fool.

You can claim his teachings were lies and sentence him to death as the religious leaders in his day.

Or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord.

The choice is yours.

5 Shots Enough?

5 Shots Enough?

We won’t even get into how the excessive amount of recoil makes a very unpleasant shooting experience. A more cumbersome reloading method. All coupled with a less than optimal sight picture, a super short barrel and sight radius, and a 12-14 pound trigger it’s hard to say yes.

There are some that swear by a 5 shot snub nose. Referring to the rest of us as morons. I swear if I hear the “the if you can’t get it done in 5 shots you shouldn’t be doing it” argument one more time I’m gonna flip out! These are usually (read carefully I said usually) the people who place their target at no more than 3 yards, on a square range, standing perfectly still and slowing pulling the trigger 5 times and being happy with a 3-5 inch group. The only response I have for these people, is the response 95% of the teenagers in my youth group give when presented with information that goes against common sense… Bruh?

If all the variables could be controlled. As in being attacked by one person and one person only in a super close quarters situation. Then yes my pick would be a 5 shot snubbie. I say it all the time 5 shot snub nose revolvers are designed for gun fights inside of a phone booth. At contact distance a snubbie is hard to beat.

But gone are the days of mugger in an alley mindset. We have entered Into the world of gang initiations, active shooters, and Jihad extremist. In those situations I have to say No, 5 shots is not even close to enough.

I want something semi auto, high capacity, and a good set of sights. I want confidence in myself and the weapon system to make precise shots out to 25 yards. If all you have is a snubbie that’s fine, the first rule to a gun fight is bring a gun. But the 2nd rule is bring enough gun. I truly believe that in this day in age the 5 shot snub nose is not enough gun.

With all of that being said, can you guess what I carry? How confused would you be if I told you I carried a Smith & Wesson 442 air weight .38 special 5 shot snub nose revolver… Now that I have completely contradicted myself, allow me to explain.

Yes I do carry a snubbie, in addition to a custom tuned Glock 19 and 50 rounds of 124 grain 9mm Hollowpoints. (Hence gunfight rule number 2) The role of backup gun is simply best suited for the 5 shot revolver.

Everything that makes it a poor choice for a primary weapon makes it near perfect for a backup. The size, the weight, the ease of concealment, and the reliability outline the characteristics of the quintessential back up weapon.

So is 5 shots enough?
As a primary I would say no.
As a back up I would say absolutely.

Stay strapped, and as always…

Fixed Blade EDC?

Fixed Blade EDC?

In extreme close quarters defensive situations a little poke poke would suite better than a little bang bang. Silent, no way to malfunction, never needs reloading. With so many reasons as to why you should, why do so many look at me sideways when they find out I do. Funny thing is not long ago I was one of those on lookers with my head canted and eyes squinted muttering under my breath, why not just carry a folder?

Flash forward a few years, after taking a few different classes (FPF TRAINING With John Murphy) Doing a little force on force, and drooling over videos from knife experts like Doug Marcaida and Fred Mastro and here I am trying daily to be as awesome as the men mentioned above. All the while doing my very best not to draw my own blood while fiddling with these tiny sharp pieces of metal.

Before anyone asks, yes I carry a folder. Two to be exact. I would be more likely to leave the house without my keys, wallet, or phone than without a solid folding knife. A small fixed and a couple of folders can address every problem you can run into on a daily basis.

The draw is FAST! There is absolutely no chance of not fully deploying the blade under stress. The carry locations are endless. Also no chance of the knife closing on your own hand in a scuffle.

Now for the down side, there’s always some stipulation, some moronic ideology that somehow crawls its way out of some idiots head and into a law book. The fixed blade laws nationwide are a collection of jargon focused on being murky, ambiguous, confusing, elusive, obscure, vague, shadowy… Wait I got lost in my thesaurus for a second. You get the point, they are outrageously unclear and left up to interpretation. No real answers on legality of concealed v open, Blade length, blade shape, and most importantly intent.

I am by no means a lawyer, and will never give law advice. With that being said maybe you could find some magical gnome and have him explain to you the convoluted work around to these idiotic laws.

Take from it what you will, personally the positives outweigh the negatives.

White light applications

White light applications

In self defense situations it is always best to leave the house with the odds stacked in your favor. There is no fair fighting when fighting for your life, cheating is encouraged. Your every day carry load out should do exactly that give you the upper hand in every situation you may find yourself in. The application of a bright white light increases your unfair advantage tremendously.

What are the benefits?

It allows you to identify the threat or non threat in any lighting condition. Allowing you to differentiate between someone who is approaching you with a weapon, or a harmless cell phone should be enough reason to carry a light.

You also gain the ability to use the light as temporary concealment from attacker, to temporarily blind, and or disorient. I don’t know about you but simultaneously highlighting a threat while concealing yourself from said threat is a win win.

But let’s throw the tacti-cool talk aside and think real world non life or death situations. You drop your keys in a movie theatre. Date night at Olive Garden and the power at goes out. Or the worst possible non life threatening situation you can find yourself in. Let me set the scene, you’re minding your own business. Pants around your ankles in a public restroom stall doing the “doo” and some dimwit leaves the restroom and kills the lights on his way out… There’s nothing worse than pooping in the dark.

The applications are countless, ranging from preventing loss of life to comedic spectacle. Lastly to put it Simply, You can’t shoot what you can’t see. So in closing if you carry a gun, carry a quality white light. If not you will be left in the dark… Pun intended.
